Welcome to Wattmotion.com, the web site I created documenting some of the work in the building of my EV and in the future some machined or programmed components for the EV industry. My name is Steve Shaffer, a design engineer living outside of the small town of Luckey Ohio. I have spend most of my life designing and programming automated machinery of all types in many different industries around the world. Although my background is electrical engineering, I also carry strong mechanical abilities as well.

Why did I want to have an EV (Electric Vehicle) ? Many reasons, mostly independence from relying on oil. To not have to be concerned if this is a good time to buy gas because it is low this week. I don’t like the fact that Americans are so reliant on middle eastern oil, being at the mercy of whatever they decide to charge for a barrel of oil.

I also have concerns with what we are putting into the air. Yes, I have seen Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient truth” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Inconvenient_Truth) and believe we have impacted the air we breath since the beginning of the industrial age.

Secondly, There is only so much oil on this earth regardless of what many say. It will run out in time and continue to rise in price. I think it’s time we start looking for alternatives to oil and fossil fuels. The electric vehicle is not the solution to all out transportation needs but can be in most of our day to day around town driving.

And lastly, I enjoy designing and building machines, then perfecting them like a fine watch. This is why I plan on stripping all of the factory computers, much of the wiring and replacing it with my own for the sheer fact that it will be simple, reliable, easy to maintain and very clean under the hood.

I’m not going to go into the details of each step because there is many excellent web sites and forums discussing the building of electric vehicles. Refer to my links page for some of the ones I found useful in my work.  I am adding pages to this site weekly so check back later. Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.
